The History of The Firat Guide

In 2008, Ibrahim Firat began helping families navigate college admissions as an Independent Educational Consultant.

Helping students apply to college, Ibrahim often found himself thinking, "This student would have thrived in a different high school." Parents were making one of the most important educational decisions of their child's life with very little objective information, often relying on a school's reputation instead of whether it was the right fit.

The "best" school for one child was often the wrong school for another. Every student has different academic strengths, learning styles, interests, personalities, and long-term goals. Yet families had very little information to help them make one of the most important educational decisions they would ever face.

By 2014, Ibrahim realized something else.

College admissions doesn't begin in 12th grade, or even in high school. For many students, it begins in 8th grade, when they choose the high school that will shape the next four years of their academic, extracurricular, and personal development.

Houston had no comprehensive resource to help families understand the private school landscape. Rather than answering the same questions one family at a time, Ibrahim created The Firat Guide.

The first edition was published in 2014. Over the next seven years, the guide became a trusted resource for Houston families navigating private school admissions. As demand grew, the project expanded with five editions covering early childhood, lower school, and middle school admissions, followed by a Boston edition focused on private high schools.

During that time, Firat Education helped well over 1,000 families navigate educational decisions, while continuing to refine the guide with each new edition.

Then education changed. The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated new models of learning. Microschools, virtual schools, hybrid programs, and other nontraditional options transformed the educational landscape. At the same time, Ibrahim co-founded Nexus Futbol Academy, giving him the opportunity to build an innovative school from the ground up rather than simply advise families about existing ones.

Instead of publishing another edition, Firat Education shifted its focus toward highly personalized one-on-one consulting. Families' situations had become more unique, and individualized guidance often provided greater value than an annual printed guide.

Today, the landscape is changing once again.

Private school admissions have become increasingly competitive. Programs like Texas education savings accounts, expanding school choice initiatives, and a growing number of educational options have created new opportunities, but also more complexity for families trying to make informed decisions.

That's why The Firat Guide is returning in a new form. Rather than updating a book once a year, we've transformed it into a living online resource that can grow, evolve, and stay current throughout the year. Every school has its own dedicated page. New topics can be added as the admissions landscape changes. Best of all, it's available free to every family.

Our philosophy hasn't changed since 2014. We believe educational planning shouldn't start when it's time to apply to college. It begins much earlier, with choosing the right educational environment at every stage of a child's journey.

At Firat Education, we don't just help families get into private schools. We help them make thoughtful educational decisions that connect private school admissions to college admissions, and ultimately to career and overall success.

Too often, families come to us wishing they had started sooner. This guide exists so they can.
